Beyond British children’s racing the only real progression is into FIS racing. FIS stands for Federation International du Ski, the world governing body of Snowsports competition.
Our FIS programme targets two principal participant types: those athletes aspiring to improve their skiing to a standard where they may make national ski team selection; and the many athletes who simply wish to gain valuable training in a safe and structured environment with a view to competing in the British National Championships and experiencing international ski racing with a little guidance.
Those athletes who are serious about their race training and are striving to reach the national team follow a 12 month programme that incorporates snowdomes in the UK for technical work, UK based fitness camps at Loch Insh in Scotland, and a full European training and racing programme culminating in the British National Championships in April.
For a fuller explanation of the full time programme, contact us to find out more for the 2008/2009 season.
For those athletes who do not have so much time to give, or who do not share the same goal of achieving National Team selection, a part time programme is available where athletes can join a separate programme as and when they can.
They will share the same training facilities as the full time programme, but will normally train under a separate coach in specified weeks.
In reality, for those athletes who are serious about achieving a National Team Selection and aspiring to a career in ski racing, it really is a necessity that you try to follow as near to a full time programme as possible.
Ski racing is great fun, but you need to be clear about your goals coming into it so as to avoid disappointment later; it is not realistic to think that a couple of weeks on snow each year will enable you to achieve an ambition of making national team selection criteria.
The national team selection criteria is an accurate measure of how much real potential an athlete has to challenge the Alpine nations and thus reach the Olympics.
For those who can only manage a couple of weeks a year, selection to the World University Winter Games is achievable, but more likely they can look to enjoy the thrill of other university racing on the European University FIS Circuit and they will certainly massively assist their chances of passing BASI ski instructor assessments.
